Aniplex announced at the premiere screening of episode one of the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works animethat the anime's first two episodes, episodes zero and one, will be one hour in length each. Episode zero, "Prologue," will premiere on October 4, and will focus on Rin Tohsaka and her Servant Archer. Episode one, "Fuyu no Hi, Unmei no Yoru," (A Winter Day, A Fateful Night) will premiere one week after episode zero on October 11, and will focus on Shirō Emiya and his Servant Saber. Episode one was screened at the Tokyo and Tokushima premieres, while episode zero was premiered at the Osaka and all foreign screenings.

Every few decades mages duel using summoned Servants from one of seven classes – Archer, Saber, Lancer, Rider, Berserker, Assassin, and Mage – for the right to claim and make a wish on the Holy Grail. These Servants are Heroic Spirits who usually embody figures from history or legend and who have powers and abilities in line with their origins, and each carries a powerful Noble Phantasm as a sort of trump card. Teenager Rin Tohsaka, the highly magically capable scion of one of the houses of mages that has traditionally competed for the Grail, is determined to participate in the newest round in memory of the father she lost ten years earlier. Though she is disappointed at having summoned Archer instead of Saber (the most powerful Servant), which results in an initially-contentious relationship with a Servant who cannot even remember which Heroic Servant he is, the match gradually starts to show signs of being a better fit than she first realized. Unfortunately an innocent bystander gets caught up in the affair when she and Archer encounter another Servant, and it is one that she cannot afford to let die. 
In the original Fate/stay night anime series, nearly the entire story was told from the perspective of Shiro, the central character and eventual master of Saber. Even though it looks, from the Next Episode preview, like the series will return to that focus, this double episode's shift to the alternate perspective on the earliest events of the series fleshes out the start of the story considerably. It establishes much better the initially-rocky relationship between Archer and Rin and how they started to grow past that and, perhaps most importantly, fleshes out Rin more as a character. Though she was always a distinct personality, here we get a much clearer sense from the beginning of where she is coming from and why, and that allows some of her early choices to make more sense.
Aniplex also began streaming a commercial for both episodes after the premiere ended in Japan. The video features the anime's opening theme, "ideal white" by Mashiro Ayano:











The new anime will follow the original game's 'Unlimited Blade Works' route and will premiere on Japanese television on October 4 at midnight. It will be split up into two cours or quarters of the year. The latter half of the anime will premiere in April 2015.

A luglio 2013, Hikaru Kondo, fondatore dello studio d'animazione ufotable, aveva annunciato - tramite un messaggio dal suo profilo Twitter - che il suo studio avrebbe prodotto prossimamente un nuovo progetto riguardante Fate/Stay Night.

Nel suo Tweet, Kondo non aveva specificato nulla riguardo la natura del nuovo progetto. A gennaio, dalla rivista Type-Moon Ace di Kadokawa è arrivata una prima conferma per la data di programmazione della nuova serie animata: in autunno.  I primi dettagli trapelati sullo staff che vi è al lavoro hanno visto la conferma di alcuni nomi dello studio ufotable che hanno già operato suFate/Zero quali il regista Takahiro Miura e i character designer AtsushiIkariya, Tomonori Sudou e Hisayuki Tabata. Succose novità sono  arrivate a luglio, in occasione della conferenza stampa di presentazione del nuovo anime. In primo luogo la serie sarà dedicata alla route dell'Unlimited Blade Works. La serie sarà divisa in due "stagioni" con la seconda parte che arriverà nella prossima primavera ad aprile 2015. Tratto da una visual novel per adulti prodotta nel 2004 dalla Type Moon, Fate/Stay Night narra le vicende relativa a una delle guerre per la conquista del "Sacro Graal" combattuta tra sette maghi ciascuno affiancato da un diverso spirito eroico. Protagonista della storia è Shiro Emiya, orfano adottato e in parte istruito alla magia dal suo defunto padre Kiritsugu, che si troverà coinvolto accidentalmente negli scontri della guerra a cui finirà per partecipare evocando lo spirito eroico Saber.

Nel cast ritroviamo: Ayako Kawasumi - Saber; Junichi Suwabe - Archer; Kana Ueda - Rin Tohsaka;Noriaki Sugiyama - Shirō Emiya; Jouji Nakata - Kirei Kotomine; Mai Kadowaki - Illyasviel von Einzbern; Miki Itou - Taiga Fujimura; Nobutoshi Canna - Lancer; Noriko Shitaya - Sakura Matō; Rikiya Koyama - Kiritsugu Emiya.

Finora di Fate/Stay Night sono state realizzate (visual novels, manga, e videogames a parte) una serie anime nel 2006 da parte dello studio DEEN. che ha realizzato anche il film Unlimited Blade Works nel 2010. ufotable ha invece realizzato tra il 2011 e il 2012 Fate/Zero prequel della storia dello Stay Night.
