This short animated video is a promotional film for the Japanese fiction novel series "Fireflies".
"Fireflies (Hotaru-no-Mure)" is a action-packed thriller about an ancient underground orphanage that secretly spawns deadly assasins known only as "Koma". Kitami, a normal fourteen year-old girl accidentally witnesses a Koma killing someone in the woods. Now she is the target of the orphanage --- and the only person who can save her is Eiji, the unwilling, shy boy that sits next to her at school.

Casshern (キャシャーン Kyashān) is a 2004 Japanese tokusatsu film adaptation of the anime series of the same name. It was written and directed by Kazuaki Kiriya. It stars Yusuke Iseya as Tetsuya Azuma/Casshern, Kumiko Aso as Luna Kozuki, Toshiaki Karasawa as Burai, Mayumi Sada as Saguree, and Jun Kaname as Barashin.

A fifty-year war between the Eastern Federation and Europa ends, with the Federation taking control of the Eurasian continent. A resistance movement rises in Zone 7 and the Federation mobilizes its military. However, the war and heavy industry have exhausted the Federation and polluted the environment.

Dr. Azuma presents his discovery of Neo Cells, human cells that, in theory, can be converted to regenerate human tissue. The Neo Cells are only found in the genome of "a primitive ethnic group.

The Sky Crawlers (Large Scale Battle) - Mamoru Oshii

The Sky Crawlers (スカイ・クロラ Sukai Kurora) is a 2008 Japanese animefilm, directed by Mamoru Oshii. It is an adaptation of Hiroshi Mori's novel.

The Sky Crawlers is set in an alternative history where, although the world is at peace, in order to ease the tension of a populace accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter pilots to engage in actual combat operations against each other. The film introduces a mystery involving characters called Kildren (キルドレ Kirudore , "kill-dolls"), humanoids genetically designed to live eternally in adolescence.

Re 'HOKUSAI': This was my first ever... and still my favorite... short animated film! I created it in my spare time while I was still a director/animator at the Richard Williams Studio in London during the late 1970's. I actually started the film after we had completed 'A Christmas Carol', when I was Richard Williams' own personal assistant at the time. 'Carol' went on to win the first of Dick's three Oscars. When my own 'Hokusai' film won a British Academy Award I moved on to set-up the 'Animus Productions' animation studio... a creative entity I led for a further 20 award-winning years. The film itself was inspired by the wonderful sketchbooks of Hokusai. When I saw them I realized that this artist was indeed a true animator at heart... he just didn't have the knowledge or the technology to be one in his lifetime. I therefore sought to bring his drawings to life for him, as homage to his genius.

Labyrinth labyrinthos (ラビリンス ラビリントス Rabirinsu rabirintosu) - Rintaro - 1987

The short follows Sachi, a girl locked in a game of hide-and-seek with her cat Cicerone. Her search leads her to an old longcase clock which doubles as a doorway to a labyrinth world. The world is filled with supernatural oddities and characters, such as cardboard working class citizens, an invisible dog, a skeleton-led train and a weird circus. Eventually, Sachi and Cicerone arrive at a circus tent where a viewing screen is displayed, leading to the following segments.

The Running Man (1989) - Yoshiaki Kawajiri

Zach Hugh is the titular "Running Man," the undefeated champion of the "Death Circus" racing circuit and has raced for 10 years. Competitors race in high-speed Formula One-like craft, and spectators bet on the lives of these people for huge winnings. A Marlowe-esque reporter is sent to interview the mysterious Zach outside of the track and watches one of his races. He soon discovers Hugh has telekinetic abilities which he uses to destroy the other racers, after quietly observing him in the dark chronically over-using an interface console inside Hugh's penthouse. As the race ends in his favor, Hugh begins to see the spirits of racers who perished on the track and he continues the race until his vehicle goes up in flames. The Death Circus ends shortly afterwards, the reporter believes it was because spectators wanted to see how long Hugh could outlast death.

Out of Sight (敲敲) - [made by three students graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts]

This is a graduation Production made by three students graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts.

The main character of little girl in the story confronts a robbery and strays from the road she is familiar with. After passing a hedge, she enters an unknown world and unfolds a magical adventure depending on senses other than vision and her imagination. With soft and cute colors as the main key, we used simple designs to depict the little girls' imaginary world.

Fumiko's Confession (フミコの告白) - Hiroyasu Ishida

“La confessione di Fumiko” (Fumiko no Kokuhaku) è lo short vincitore del “YouTube Video Awards Japan 2009″ (1,3 milioni di contatti su youtube e 500.000 su Nico Nico Douga) che si era anche meritato un articolo sulNewtype Magazine di Kadokawa Shoten, ottenendo un’entusiastica accoglienza, tra gli altri, da Mamoru Hosoda (La ragazza che saltava nel tempo, Summer Wars, ecc.).
In più si era aggiudicato lo “Student Award of Excellence dei Tokyo Anime Awards”, una menzione speciale al “Festival Internazionale dell’Animazione di Ottawa” e “l’Excellence Prize” del 14mo Festival delle Arti Multimediali (Japan Media Arts Festival) promosso dal governo giapponese.


Il tutto ruota su un frangente molto “awkward”. Fumiko, ottenuto da Takashi un rifiuto dopo aver avuto il coraggio di chiedergli di uscire insieme (lui rifiuta perchè vuole concentrarsi solo sul baseball) perde la testa e corre via percorrendo distanze indicibili, con balzi degni del gatto con gli stivali, per ritrovarsi, alla fine, nuovamente di fronte a lui promettendogli di cucinargli del “miso” ogni mattina se uscirà con lei. Risultato? Altro rifiuto dal “baka-Takashi”, con la stessa scusa, e svenimento della pulzella.
Il tutto su sfondi 3D notevoli (realizzati da amici di Ishida) e con una ottima “colonna sonora”.

This is a short film about a girl who has trouble making friends and her relationship with a sentient chair. It captures the feeling of childhood, growing up, and the magic of animation. It's directed and animated by a young team who also recently worked on the short filmHinata no Aoshigure.

Background:
noitaminA is an anime block on FujiTV which has been running shows which tend to appeal to older female demographics and character driven works like Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile, etc. Today they had the annual conference announcing new works and also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the block. This short film was produced as part of the anniversary celebration. It does a pretty good job of capturing the tone of what noitaminA was known for historically, and it's rather bittersweet because of late the block has moved somewhat away from stuff like this, attempting more mainstream and otaku driven stuff which is pretty lame.

Aquatic Language tries to relay to the audience the importance of language; and the need for communication. It mixes 2D and 3D visual techniques with dramatic camera movements and angles to enhance its dialogue.

Jiro Taniguchi's work is centered around the every day themes, the slowness, the solitary walk, the relations between man and nature. Well known in France for his intimistic parallel universes with "Quartier Lointain", he was awarded numerous prizes in Europe. He notably cooperated with Moebius on a manga called "ICARE". 

Ever since I heard one of his radio interviews where he explained that nothing could ever be the same after March 11th, I had wanted to meet him.

Très connu en France pour ses univers intimistes parallèles depuis "Quartier Lointain", il a reçu plusieurs prix en Europe. Il a notamment collaboré avec Moebius sur une BD intitulée "ICARE".

Documentary about Frenchman Jean Giraud, one of the most influential comic strip illustrators and authors of all time and also one of the genre's best kept secrets. He achieved his greatest fame under the pseudonym/alter ego Moebius, and his artistic influence extends beyond Europe to the USA and Japan. Features interviews with Giraud himself, Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, American comic book artists Jim Lee and Mike Mignolla and many others.

Benché possa apparire improprio proporre un autore francese come il grande Moebius in un blog che parla di anime e manga, in realtà c'è un legame profondo tra Jean Giraud ed il mondo dell'illustrazione e dell'animazione americano e nipponico. Miyazaki è, ad esempio, un autore che ha sviluppato temi simili a quelli di Giraud, anche se, spesso, in maniera indipendente. Basti pensare alle macchine volanti di Nausicaa o di Laputa per trovare un legame con certe illustrazioni di Giraud.

Comunque, la grandezza dell'inventiva di Moebius, molto intrisa di avanguardia e surrealismo, è sicuramente immensa e non conosce eguali al mondo.
